19 Years ago Today, YouTube came to life

Nineteen years ago today, on April 24, 2005, YouTube, the popular video-sharing platform, witnessed its inaugural upload.

The 19-second clip titled "Me at the zoo" was posted by Jawed Karim, one of YouTube's co-founders. In the video, Karim stands in front of an elephant exhibit at San Diego Zoo, discussing the elephants’ trunks. Remarkably, this video has amassed over 317 million views as of April 24, 2024.

The website's domain was registered on February 14, 2005, by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, former PayPal employees. Originally envisioned as a dating site, the trio pivoted to a platform for sharing home videos, realizing its potential.

YouTube went live to the public a month after the first video's upload, in May 2005. Following its launch, YouTube rapidly gained popularity as a social media hub for video sharing and was acquired by Google just over a year later. Today, YouTube is headquartered in San Bruno, California, and remains a dominant force in online video content.
